For anyone just starting the keto diet, you might be wondering if you need to count calories. There are multiple reasons I recommend you calculate calories on the keto diet, and today I’m going to discover how you can go about doing this. You’ll find that by counting calories each day, you’ll stay on track with the keto diet to get the results you desire this year.

Do I Need To Calculate Calories On Keto?

I highly recommend that anyone on the keto diet calculates their calories. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, some people tend to eat too many calories on the keto plan, which means they aren’t able to lose any weight on this diet. On the other hand, other people eat too few calories. We always recommend trying to stay above an absolute minimum of 1250 calories each day, or you might risk other health problems while following the keto diet.

Why Are Calories So Important for Nutrition?

No matter what type of diet you are following, it’s worth keeping an eye on your calorie consumption to maintain your overall health. The human body needs calories in order to survive and grow, and without these, the cells in our body would die. When you calculate calories on the keto diet, you’ll ensure you have enough energy to carry out your basic daily functions, such as breathing and moving. Of course, you need to focus on eating a healthy amount of calories each day. Over or undereating can both result in huge issues for the body. As a guideline, the average woman needs roughly 2,000kcal a day, but for men, this increases to 2,500 kcal. If you are looking to lose or gain weight, you may need to adjust this slightly to suit your personal goals.

In order to calculate the number of calories you need to consume each day, there are certain terms to keep in mind:

  • Base TDEE – The base TDEE estimates the number of calories you burn during the day on a day where you are physically active.
  • Goal TDEE – The goal TDEE may be slightly different from your base TDEE, based on whether you are looking to gain or lose weight. If you are looking to lose weight over the next few months, you’ll want to ensure you aren’t consuming more calories than you are burning off each day.
  • BMI – Our body mass index is one of the best ways to calculate the number of calories you need on a daily basis. This is calculated with your weight and height, and from there, you can tell whether you are currently a healthy weight for your height.
  • BMR – The basal metabolic rate is the number of calories your body burns each day in order to just stay alive. This number would correspond to a rest day, where you don’t undertake any physical activity.
